Hotel Katajanokka used to be a prison until 2002. After closing it was bought by Best Western who transformed it into a hotel and opened the doors to the public in 2007. It retains many of the features such as inset doors, prison staircases and high windows, along with the staff wearing guard and convict outfits. Brilliant.
The restaurant is in the basement. We suffer an early disappointment when we find out they have run out of reindeer. I opt for the duck and Elina settles on the beef fillet. We also share some herb potatoes. All of which goes down well.
For dessert Elina orders a flan which turns out to be a crème brûlée while I go for something rather more chocolatey. Throughout the meal we are kept well stocked with drinks and water.
